In the creation of the show 'No, I didnt steal this out of your trash', Caryn Sturhahn guides viewers through an at times interactive experience with some of the 20th centurys most influential and intrepid artists. The reference to artist influencing artist is multi-dimensional, as her pieces are all odes and mimics of, and to these progressive creators. The artists she chooses to celebrate through her various takes on their pieces and styles are hand picked, and demonstrates how these artists influenced and took off from one another.
As Andy Warhol referenced the commercialization of society and arts integral relationship with mass culture, Caryn offers an ode to Warhol in her piece Barcode, which is a comment on the commodification of art and art as product. Her pieces range from direct replicas (like that of Kazimir Malevichs suprematist composition White on White) to the title of the show itself. The title, and the pieces within the show, reference one of the artists that has been most influential to Caryns work, Robert Rauschenberg.
The obvious connection to his work is clear, in Rauschenberg's use of trash in his pieces, which embodies his belief that painting is more like the real world if it's made out of the real world. Subtly, the title and Rauschenberg ode was chosen in light of his lawsuit against another Florida artist who had sold Rauschenberg's own trash as art. This is particularly interesting given Rauschenbergs award of the Grand Prize at the Venice Biennial for his erasure of a drawing by de Kooning.
Caryn's works shed light on some of the deepest questions facing art in the 20th century and the future of art in the 21st. What and how do we define art, and whose art is it? How does this art relate to us and how do we relate to it?
In her creation of a modern, minimalist and conceptual set of pieces full of references to the actual movement of 20th century art, the show is both a tribute and an enquiry, and as such demanding of an active and discerning audience.
